There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over Newfields gardens as the afternoon light begins to shift. The crowds thin. The shadows stretch long across the lawn. And the golden hour — that warm, amber window just before the sun dips behind the tree line — wraps around everything like a slow exhale. It is one of my favorite places in all of Indianapolis to photograph, and on an evening this past season, it was exactly where the Kassym family stood, expectant and radiant, ready to step into one of the most meaningful chapters of their lives together.

This was their first time being photographed as an expecting couple. That detail matters more than it might seem. There is a tenderness to a first maternity session — an awareness that this particular season, with all its anticipation and softness and wonder, will not come again in quite this way. Sanzhar and Alua arrived with open hearts, and what unfolded over the next hour was one of those sessions I will carry with me for a long time.

A Session Rooted in Warmth and Connection

From the moment we met at Newfields, I knew this was going to be a beautiful evening. Alua has a presence that is impossible to miss — calm, glowing, and genuinely joyful in a way that translates directly through a lens. Her partner matched her energy completely. They were, without question, a joy to work with.

We moved through the gardens at an easy pace, following the light as it shifted and softened across the landscape. Newfields offers something that few locations in Indianapolis can match: depth. There is always another corner, another line of trees, another architectural detail catching the last warmth of the day. For maternity photography, that richness of environment means every frame feels intentional and full.

The golden hour did what it always does — it made everything feel slightly more like a dream. Alua's skin caught the light beautifully. The warmth of the tones in her gallery speaks to that hour in a way that no other time of day can replicate. There is a reason photographers chase the golden hour obsessively, and evenings like this one are exactly why.

We captured close to ninety images throughout the session, each one telling a different part of the same story. Some were quiet and intimate — her partner's hand resting on her belly, her eyes closed, the world soft behind her. Others were full of laughter and movement, the kind of candid moments that remind you this is real life happening, not a performance of it.

Why Maternity Sessions Matter

I have heard clients say, more than once, that they almost skipped their maternity session. They felt too big, too uncomfortable, too uncertain about whether photographs would feel like them. And then they see their gallery, and they understand.

The maternity season is one of the most fleeting and significant of a person's life. It lasts months, but the particular feeling of it — the anticipation, the intimacy between two people becoming three, the quiet wonder of a body doing something extraordinary — that passes quickly. And once it is gone, it is gone.

Professional maternity photos at a location like Newfields, shot at golden hour with natural light and genuine emotion, are not about capturing perfection. They are about capturing truth. The truth of how you looked at each other. The truth of how you felt. The truth of who you were at this exact moment, before everything changed in the most beautiful possible way.

The Kassym's gallery holds all of that. Decades from now, she and her partner will look at those images and remember exactly how this felt. And their child will one day see them, and understand — perhaps for the first time in a deeply visual way — how loved they were before they even arrived.

That is why maternity sessions matter. Not for the images themselves, but for what the images hold.
