From Bump to Birthday Cake: Documenting the Eberly Family's First Year

There is something quietly extraordinary about being invited into a family's story not once, but across an entire year of becoming.

When the Eberly family first reached out, it was the beginning of something — an expectant belly, a season of waiting, a life on the verge of arriving. What unfolded over the months that followed was one of the most rewarding journeys I get to experience as a photographer: watching a family grow from two into three, and documenting each tender chapter along the way.

This is their story.

Chapter One: Maternity

Every maternity session carries its own kind of electricity. There is anticipation threaded through every image — the weight of a hand resting on a belly, the quiet look exchanged between two people who know everything is about to change.

With the Eberlys, that feeling was palpable from the moment we started. They came ready to be present, to be themselves, and that made all the difference. My job is never to manufacture something that isn't there — it's to get out of the way of what is. With this family, what was there was already beautiful.

We leaned into the warmth of natural light and let the moments lead. The images that came out of that session feel less like portraits and more like memories already — soft, cinematic, and completely real.

Chapter Two: Newborn

Newborn sessions are where time slows down. There is a hush to them that I never take for granted.

When the Eberlys welcomed their little one and we gathered for the newborn session, that same ease and warmth they brought to maternity was still there — only now there was a tiny person at the center of it all. Those first weeks pass faster than any parent is prepared for. My goal is always to hold that season still, just for a moment.

We captured the small things: the curl of tiny fingers, the way a newborn settles into a parent's chest like they were always meant to be there, the exhausted and radiant look of new parents who are somehow already completely in love. These are the images families return to twenty years later and feel everything all over again.

The Eberlys were a joy to work with from the very first session — warm, fun, and genuinely easy to be around. That kind of energy translates directly into photographs.

Chapter Three: The First Year and the Cake Smash

A first birthday is its own kind of milestone. It marks a full year of firsts — first smile, first laugh, first steps — and it deserves to be celebrated with just as much intention as everything that came before it.

For the Eberly family's cake smash session, we brought all of that energy together. By this point, we had been through so much together as photographer and family. There was a comfort and trust that made the session feel effortless — which is exactly how it should feel. No one had to perform. We just had to show up and let things happen.

And things happened. The kind of genuine, joyful, slightly chaotic first birthday magic that makes this session type one of my absolute favorites. This little one dove in, the family laughed, and the light was just right.

A Note on What Makes These Journeys So Special

The Eberly family is what I quietly hope for every time a client books a session. Beautiful, fun, and genuinely a great team to work with — that is the honest truth of it. When a family brings that kind of spirit to their sessions, the photographs almost make themselves.

But beyond the ease of it, what moves me most about milestone journeys like this one is the arc. When I look at the maternity images and then the cake smash images side by side, I can see an entire year lived. A family that grew into itself. Moments that would have slipped by, held still.

That is what this work is for.
