Some sessions feel like they were made for the camera. The Meixell family's first birthday milestone session was one of those.
From the moment we started, there was a softness to the whole morning — a warm, pink-toned world built around one very expressive little girl turning one. She arrived in the sweetest pink smocked romper with "one" across the front, a floral tutu skirt, and a bow headband that could have stolen the show on its own. She, of course, did not need the help.

As an family photographer, I've photographed a lot of milestones, but first birthday sessions hold a particular kind of meaning. They're not just about how the baby has grown — though she has, unmistakably — they're about how the whole family has grown around her.
One of the first frames I loved was of her mom, leaning softly against a white wall with her daughter nestled close. There was nothing posed about it. The light came in clean and warm, mom was smiling down at her girl, and the whole image just breathed. That moment reminded me of why I do this work: not to manufacture something beautiful, but to get out of the way and let it happen.

Then there was her older brother. He's a teenager, which means he's at an age when affection doesn't always come easy in front of a camera. But the moment he tucked her against his shoulder and she settled in, everything else fell away. His expression was completely unguarded — just a big brother, fully in love with his baby sister. That's one of the frames I'll think about for a long time.

She also had opinions about the props. We'd set up a vintage pink rotary phone on a textured rug, along with a tiny pair of pink sunglasses. She went straight for both of them with total confidence, like someone who had been dressing in pink her whole life — which, to be fair, she had. Her personality was front and center the entire session.

The image that stays with me most is a close-up portrait: her looking straight up into the camera with the most enormous, curious eyes. No smile required. Those eyes said everything.
That's the heart of authentic first birthday photos — not the outfit (though hers was perfect), not the props (though she used them well), but the moments that tell you exactly who this child already is and who her family is with her.

At KP Photography Indy, that's always the goal. Whether I'm working with a family celebrating their first year together, a couple in the middle of their story, or a senior stepping into the next chapter, I'm looking for the real version of what's happening. You don't need to perform it. You just need to show up — I'll do the rest.
